Lithuanian scientist awarded L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women In Science
On June 5, at the Latvian Academy of Sciences, during the annual L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Ceremony three awards of 6000 euros were given out to Latvian scientists, one to Lithuanian and one to Estonian scientist. It is already the fourteenth time The L'Oréal Baltic For Women in Science fellowships honours Latvian women and the second one for Lithuanians and Estonians. So far, 46 scientists from the Baltic States have been awarded with the fellowships for personal growth.
This year, five talented women researchers from the Baltic States received the award – Dr. Giedrė Motuzaitė-Matuzevičūtė Keen (Lithuania), Dr. Ilva Nakurte (Latvia), Mg. sc. ing. Anna Fridrihsone (Latvia), Mg. sc. chem. Margarita Baitimirova (Latvia) and Dr. Karin Kodermann (Estonia).
Since 2017, Dr. Giedrė Motuzaitė-Matuzevičiūtė Keen has been the head of Bioarchaeology Research Centre of Vilnius University. Giedrė is researching human paleonutrition and the prosperity of agriculture in Central Asia. This study examines the evolution of human nutrition in prehistoric central part of the Tian Shan mountain range and its influence on the further spread of cereal crops across Eurasia. When analyzing the context and environmental conditions of the site of archeological research, we can look at the molecular level of the artifacts by applying certain scientific methods, thus opening up a much broader view of our past.
L’Oréal Baltic For Women in Science Fellowship Programme is implemented in cooperation with the Lithuanian, Latvian and Estonian Academies of Sciences and National Commissions for UNESCO of these three countries.
