Culture Minister visits UNESCO

On May 3 in Paris,  Lithuania‘s Minister of Culture Mindaugas Kvietkauskas met with the Director of the UNESCO World Heritage Centre Mechtild Rössler and  Chief of the Europe and North America Unit at the World Heritage Centre Isabelle Anatole-Gabriel, as well as with Director General of the International Council on Monuments and Sites ICOMOS, Marie-Laure Lavenir.

The importance of experts in managing and preserving the heritage was underlined during these meetings. The Minister reminded the interlocutors about Lithuania‘s decision to present the nomination of the modernist architecture of Kaunas to be inscribed on the World Heritage List. He also shared information on the forum of modern cities that would be held this autumn in Kaunas.

It was noted during the meetings that this year Lithuania is celebrating two anniversaries of inscriptions on the World Heritage List: 25 years since the inclusion of Vilnius Historic centre and 15 years since the  inscription of Kernavė Archaeological Site.

The Minister of Culture paid a visit to Paris on the occasion of a meeting of the culture and European affairs ministers of the European Union on the subject of the protection of heritage. The meeting was held at the initiative of France in response to the fire that ravaged the Notre Dame of Paris Cathedral.
