At UNESCO Lithuania underlines the importance of the safety of journalists and information literacy

At the 205th session of the Executive Board of UNESCO, taking place in Paris on 3-17 October, Lithuania pays particular attention to the issues of the safety of journalists, freedom of media and expression.

 

“Even though the legal framework for the safety of journalists has evolved over the last decade, full implementation of international norms, remains challenging, especially, when addressing the threats faced by local and women journalists,“ said  Irena Vaišvilaitė, Ambassador, Permanent Representative of Lithuania to UNESCO in the statement by Lithuania delivered on 9 October.

The Ambassador reminded the members of the Executive Board of UNESCO that in a couple of weeks, on October 24-25, Lithuania will host the feature conference of Global Media and Information Literacy (MIL) week. The conference will discuss such topics as fighting against misinformation, fake news and propaganda.

Ambassador I. Vaišvilaitė underlined that Lithuania supports the efforts of the Director-General of UNESCO to improve the functioning and efficiency of UNESCO and said that it is very important to preserve a crucial role of experts in all sectors of UNESCO activities.

 

Lithuania also supports UNESCO in advantaging gender equality, as well as the empowerment of women and girls. I. Vaišvilaitė accentuated the need of investment in all levels of education as premising the sustainable economic growth and appreciated the goal to engage UNESCO more actively in the international fora, especially in innovative formats such as Partners Forum and Initiative for Mosul.

Founded in 1945, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization is a specialized agency of the United Nations. Lithuania joined UNESCO in 1991. For the term 2015-2019 Lithuania is a member of the Executive Board, one of the governing bodies of UNESCO.
