At the UNESCO Executive Board, Lithuania emphasizes the importance of communication and information
On October 14, Permanent Delegate of Lithuania to UNESCO, Ambassador Irena Vaišvilaitė addressed the Executive Board members, stressing the importance of the Communication and Information sector.
While delivering the national statement, the Ambassador noted that Lithuania provides its energy, knowledge, expertise and financial resources in order to support the organisation's efforts in this sector.
‘‘We believe that the role of communication and information is increasing globally and UNESCO is an exceptional UN agency with a clear mandate in this field“, affirmed the Permanent Delegate of Lithuania.
The Ambassador noted that Lithuania welcomes the ongoing Strategic transformation of UNESCO that aims to improve the organisation’s efficiency and supports the efforts to make UNESCO more visible in the United Nations system.
Lithuania commends as well the initiative of UNESCO to elaborate recommendations on Open Science.
Ambassador I. Vaišvilaitė underlined the importance of the “Memory of the World” Programme, which principle objective is to protect and to safeguard the documentary heritage, and called on member states to reach an agreement on the review of the Programme.
This session marks the end of Lithuania’s term as a member of the UNESCO Executive Board. Lithuania was elected to this one of the three constitutional organs of UNESCO (the others being the General Conference and the Secretariat) in November 2015. Lithuania will seek reelection to the Executive Board in 2021.
