200th birth anniversary of photographer Józef Czechowicz celebrated at UNESCO

On December 3, a photo exhibition „19th century seen by Józef Czechowicz – Cities of Lithuania, Belarus, Poland and Ukraine“ was opened at UNESCO headquarters in Paris. It celebrates the 200th birth anniversary of the photographer.

"Czechowicz brought the quality of photography of our region closer to Europe. His works undoubtedly contributed to the further development of Lithuanian photography," - said Ambassador of Lithuania to UNESCO Irena Vaišvilaitė. She underlined that Czechowicz’s photographic legacy is a part of the cultural heritage of several countries in the region: Lithuania, Belarus, Poland and Ukraine.

This exhibition reflects creative achievements of Józef Czechowicz (1818-1888) and his importance for the region. In addition to the pictures of Vilnius, it displays the oldest known photographs of Kiev from 1859 to 1860, as well as photographs of Grodno, Lublin, Chelm, Kaunas and Trakai.
