Landsbergis tells the Speaker of the Parliament of Georgia: “‘Foreign influence’ law is incompatible with EU democratic standards”

During his visit to Tbilisi, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania, Gabrielius Landsbergis, met with the Speaker of Parliament, Shalva Papuashvili. The Foreign Minister stressed at the meeting that the law on “foreign influence” was incompatible with the democratic standards of the European Union.

“Let me say very clearly that “the new law on foreign influence, as well as the launch of the campaign of intimidation, pressure, and violence against Georgian civil society, will stop Georgia’s further progress on the path of integration into the European Union and NATO,” Landsbergis said at the meeting.

The Foreign Minister noted that the rule of law, human rights and civil society were guarantors of the strength and vitality of democratic countries, not an obstacle to their resilience to malign influences of hostile forces.

“Georgia has already achieved a lot on the path of integration, and the decision on candidate status has never been so close in the talks on EU membership. However, whatever has been done can be undone immediately if Georgia violates the core values and provisions of the EU,” said the head of Lithuania’s diplomacy.

On 15 May, Landsbergis and the Ministers of the Baltic states and Iceland are visiting Georgia.
