On May 15, the Government of Lithuania approved the Strategic Guidelines for Lithuania’s relations with the United States of America (USA) drafted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The document mainly aims to provide a perspective for strengthening the strategic partnership between Lithuania and the United States under changing conditions and propose concrete implementation measures.

The guidelines emphasize the need to respond to geopolitical challenges that directly impact Lithuania and the international community as a whole and provide recommendations on how Lithuania’s response to these challenges could strengthen its strategic partnership with the United States.

“A strategic partnership with the U.S. based on common fundamental values remains a key condition for the security and prosperity of our country. In the times of geopolitical fragmentation, we must do everything to ensure the U.S. attention and presence in Lithuania and our region,” the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Gabrielius Landsbergis said.

The Strategic Guidelines emphasize the need to maintain U.S. political attention to Lithuania, continue the U.S. military presence in Lithuania, strengthen relations with the U.S. administrations and Congress, and ensure a regular high-level dialogue on key issues of Lithuania’s foreign policy and economic cooperation.

“States defending the rule of law must unite regardless of geographical distances. Therefore, it is important for Lithuania and the United States to strengthen ties with the Indo-Pacific region further,” Landsbergis said.

The Guidelines highlight political cooperation, focusing on security and defence issues, economic cooperation and potential opportunities for realising soft power in collaboration in areas such as ties with the Lithuanian community, academic centres, Jewish organisations, culture and sports. Recommendations on Lithuania’s actions to implement the priorities in the document are also provided. The Strategic Guidelines have been developed in line with the objective of the Government programme to build and strengthen the strategic partnership with the U.S., to ensure long-term cooperation and the promotion of parliamentary diplomacy, and to strengthen cooperation with individual U.S. states.
